They Sing The Blues In Kansas City is my salute to one of the greatest of the jazz cities. In what kind of place does the mayor buy Bird’s alto sax to erect a monument in the park (adjacent to the historic jazz neighborhood around 18th and Vine)?

A place that takes jazz and blues very seriously. A place where my friend David Basse can sing, lead a band and run City Light records which, with this one, has released four Mike Melvoin CDs! (And you should check out David’s “Like Jazz” and “Strike When Your Iron Is Hot” CDs) The blues is the heartbeat in KC and this one is for those good folks!

I'll Be Seeing You

I’ll Be Seeing You written in 1938 by Sammy Fain and Irv Kahal became a classic WWII song of loss and longing. Sinatra had his hit in 1944 when it was a #1 record. Tony, Billie, Bing, Ella, all followed and many more after them.

The song is emblematic of a time when songs were made to last. Today, the young performers who have tired of the trivia they’ve been singing are one after another reclaiming this repertoire and this song especially. It makes sense. Adult songs for and about adults. Timeless melodies with deeply personal lyrics. Sometimes this song is so poignant that I am compelled to say, in the solos, that we can and will go on.
